The Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown communities are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Rafael Bencosme, affectionately known to students, parents, and colleagues alike as “Mr. B.” A dedicated educator, proud Sleepy Hollow High School alumnus, and cherished brother, Rafael passed away, leaving behind a legacy defined by compassion, service, and an unwavering love for education and community.
Mr. B was more than just a teacher—he was a mentor, a role model, and a friend to all who had the privilege of knowing him. For years, he served in the Tarrytown School District, where he made a lasting impact on generations of students through his warmth, patience, and heartfelt dedication to their growth. His classroom was a place of learning, laughter, and love—a safe haven where every child felt seen and valued.
A proud graduate of Sleepy Hollow High School, Rafael returned to his hometown to give back in the most profound way: by shaping young minds and guiding students through their most formative years. He took immense pride in his roots, and his deep connection to the community was evident in everything he did.
His role extended far beyond the classroom. Mr. B was known for his close ties with the Sleepy Hollow Police Department, especially his brother, Officer Bencosme, a beloved school resource officer. Rafael was a passionate supporter of law enforcement and frequently brought his students to the station, believing in the power of connection and community. His presence always brought smiles and his kindness never went unnoticed.
The Sleepy Hollow PBA shared a heartfelt tribute, stating, “Rafael Bencosme, aka Mr. B, was a well-loved teacher in the district for many years. He was a Sleepy Hollow graduate and the oldest brother to our very own SRO, Officer Bencosme. Mr. B was a huge supporter of the police department and always showed our officers love. He especially loved bringing his class to visit us each year. His presence in the community will be missed. May you rest in peace, Mr. B!”
Rafael’s passing leaves a void that will be difficult to fill. His joy, humility, and the respect he showed to everyone—from kindergartners to colleagues—will never be forgotten. His legacy will live on in the lives of the students he taught, the community he served, and the hearts he touched.
