AMES, Iowa — The Iowa State University Athletics Department is mourning the tragic loss of Alex Ernst, a beloved and dedicated member of the Cyclone Football family, who died Sunday in a car accident.
Ernst, who served as a football video production specialist, was a fixture within Iowa State Athletics for nearly two decades. His journey began as a student worker and evolved into a critical full-time role within the football program after graduation. Ernst earned both his bachelor’s degree in education in 2010 and a master’s degree in higher education in 2014 from Iowa State University.
“We are devastated by the tragic passing of Alex Ernst,” said ISU Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard. “For nearly 20 years behind the scenes, first as a student and then as a full-time employee, Alex was an unsung hero who played an important role in our department’s success through his outstanding work in video operations.”
Known for his tireless dedication and behind-the-scenes excellence, Ernst played a vital role in supporting the Cyclone football team’s strategic efforts. He was responsible for filming practices and games, ensuring the coaching staff had the video tools necessary for preparation throughout the year.
Head football coach Matt Campbell reflected on the deep impact Ernst had on the program and its people:
“We are heartbroken by this news,” said Campbell. “Alex was an important and valued member of our football family and had a special relationship with so many in our program. He was exceptional at his job and took great pride in what he did.”
Ernst’s passion for Iowa State Athletics extended far beyond the football field. He was a devoted supporter of all Cyclone teams and was widely respected for his work ethic, professionalism, and warm demeanor.
His sudden death has left a profound void within the Iowa State community. Colleagues, coaches, athletes, and friends alike are remembering Ernst not only for his professional contributions but also for the friendships and trust he built over the years.
“Everyone in the ISU Athletics Department family is keeping Alex’s loved ones and friends in their thoughts and prayers,” added Pollard, “as well as the other individuals lost in this terrible accident.”
As Iowa State grieves, tributes continue to pour in from across the athletic department and the broader college football community, recognizing Alex Ernst as a dedicated professional, a loyal Cyclone, and a cherished friend.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been made public. The university has indicated that support services are being offered to members of the athletics community affected by the loss.
Ernst’s legacy will be remembered not only in the footage he captured, but in the hearts of the countless people he supported throughout his long career with Iowa State.
