ST. PETERSBURG, FL — The community of St. Petersburg is mourning the tragic loss of Ethan Martin, a young motorcyclist who was killed in a violent crash that occurred on the evening of Saturday, May 3, 2025. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, which may have involved high speed or street racing.
According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, the crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m. along 34th Street North, near the intersection with 38th Avenue. Witnesses reported seeing two motorcycles traveling at a high rate of speed when one of the riders, later identified as 24-year-old Ethan Martin, lost control and collided with another vehicle.
Emergency crews responded quickly, but despite their efforts, Martin was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision remained on site and is cooperating with investigators. The second motorcyclist fled the scene and has not yet been identified.
A Life Cut Tragically Short
Ethan Martin was known by friends and family as a passionate young man who had a deep love for motorcycles, the outdoors, and the freedom of the open road. He was described as someone who was always smiling, full of energy, and deeply loyal to those he cared about.
“He was fearless and full of life,” said his older sister, Alyssa Martin. “He loved to ride, to explore, and to make people laugh. He had a heart of gold and was always willing to help someone in need.”
Martin was a graduate of Northeast High School and had recently been working as an apprentice mechanic, hoping one day to open his own auto shop. He also participated in local bike nights and was part of a tight-knit group of motorcycle enthusiasts in the St. Petersburg area.
“He wasn’t reckless—he was passionate,” said longtime friend and fellow rider, Trevor Gaines. “Sometimes that passion made him push the limits, but he was never out there trying to hurt anyone. He just loved the thrill, the ride, the wind.”
Police Investigating Possible Racing Involvement
Investigators have indicated that preliminary evidence suggests the possibility that the crash was the result of a high-speed race or aggressive driving between two motorcycles. Skid marks and witness statements point to speeds well above the posted limit at the time of the collision.
While police have not confirmed charges, they have issued a plea for the second motorcyclist to come forward, and for anyone with video or further information to contact the department’s traffic homicide unit.
“This is a tragic example of how a split-second decision can end a life and devastate families,” said Chief Anthony Holloway. “We urge all riders and drivers to make safe choices on the road. One moment of speed or recklessness can have irreversible consequences.”
A Community in Mourning
As news of Ethan Martin’s death spread, tributes began pouring in on social media from friends, classmates, and fellow riders. A candlelight vigil is being organized near the crash site, where a growing memorial of flowers, candles, and photographs now stands.
“This hurts so much,” wrote one friend on Facebook. “I just saw you last week, laughing and making jokes like always. You didn’t deserve this, Ethan. Ride in paradise.”
Martin’s parents, though devastated by the loss, have expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community. They are now urging other young riders to value life and ride safely.
